Queen Mary's Tis Hazari is one of the oldest
residential schools in Delhi. It was founded by Ms Helen Jerwood
who came to India as a self-supporting Missionary. With the
specific purpose of educating women in India, she opened an
English medium school at Jama Masjid in 1912. In 1914, Queen
Mary's shifted to Tis Hazari and grew immensely in strength and
name.

It is a matter of great pride that Queen
Mary's is the only school that was written about in detail by
Bashiruddin Ahmed in his classic history of Delhi. Today it is
marked as the heritage site in the historic city of Delhi and
has contributed effectively to the education of the "Girl Child"
completing a century.
FIRST INDIAN PRINCIPAL - MISS SHANTI
DEVIDITTA
The era of Indian Principals started from
1945. The first Indian Principal was Ms. S. Deviditta. Under the
aegis of Ms. Deviditta, it grew because of her foresight and
dedication. Keeping the era in mind academics included subject
like Home Science where cooking, stitching and first aid etc
made the parents send their daughters to school. Sports was an
annual function presided by people of political and social
importance. During this period the teachers resided in the
School and were responsible for not only their subjects but also
sports, cleanliness and discipline of the school. Music, vocal &
instrumental, classical dancing and stitching was part of the
curriculum. Queen Mary's School was the most sought after
educational institution of that era and continues to be so. It
was educational institution of that era and continues to be so.
It was fortunate for the school to be under the guidance of
able Principals like Ms. Shanti Laha, Mrs. Masih, Mrs. K.R.
Jacob, because of their dedicated hard work and guidance the
school continues to hold the prestige and pride of the bygone
era.
Mrs. N. Kapur who now heads the school, has
long standing relationship with it. She had been nurtured and
groomed by Miss Deviditta and Miss Laha. After completing her
education (M.A., B.Ed) she joined the school as a Senior History
teacher under Miss. S. Laha. The institution is privileged to
have a Principal who has studied here, taught here and now heads
it.
The current strength of the school is above
4500 and the pressure of admitting more and more students to
school speaks volumes for the high standards of the school. The
greenery within the boundaries of the school comes as a
pleasant surprise as you cross the busy Tis Hazari streets and
enter the beautiful School premises.
